Nurture overall quality of life of kidney patients undergoing Hemodialysis by Understanding kidney functions

Reengineering of Impact of dialysis therapy on several aspects of life in case of kidney patient is required. Despite the advancing technology and treatment available, statistics of kidney cases are seen to be spiking. Do you really know how kidney functions?

Its acts as a filter that removes all the toxins from body and helps to reabsorb minerals needed. It prevents molecule like proteins to flow across blood but if seen in blood it is the warning sign.

Just like in our family when one gets sick, other members of family bare extra load of responsibility. In the same way, when a body organ gets sick and affected, other organs get extra responsibilities. Hence, needs to modify the functioning of rest of the body organ.

Chronic kidney disease requires artificial means of excretion for survival .The terms like creatinine  ,protein ,sodium, potassium ,fluid intake restriction are synonymous with kidney suffering patients as doctor always addresses them saying “ your creatinine levels is high”,  “your kidney is shrinking”  or “you may have to undergo dialysis.  These are some of the scary word a person comes across when they see their biochemical parameters getting deranged.

Research Methodology:  All the patients 15 + years that currently had or once had a diagnosis of end-stage renal disease and currently received or had received treatment were taken into consideration for our study. Patients with recognised mental health difficulties or in the terminal stage of their illness were not included. As per questionnaire developed, the data was collected and analysed. Correlation between nutrition as depended variable and independent variable such as factors affecting lifestyle like stress, appetite, religion, family life, body image, social life, independence, finances, sex life, exercise ability and mood was studied.

Critical analysis:  Focusing on non clinical factors affecting 108 patients taken into consideration, we observed majorly factors as shown in the figure. Blue (0-5) indicates scale which shows positive response to asked questions and Red (6-10) indicated scale which shows negative response to asked questions.

Focus point: There is need to develop a comprehensive health psychology service to run concurrently with a renal counselling. A Team comprises of health expert, a clinical psychological dietician cum nutrition & Medical nutrition therapist  are needed to fill  the huge gap.

Still further research is required to understand complex nature of human being and their body functioning.
